The ravines, forests, Alpine pastures and mountain lakes in South Tyrol provide more than enough incentive for an all-day hike and a refreshing summer swim with the family. Open all-year round, the mountain trails start right at the Hotel Zum Hirschen. On a hiking or biking trip off the beaten track in this pristine terrain, you’re immersed in the serenity of nature. It won’t be long before you’ll discover the healing powers of the forests
A springtime hike along the Mendola Pass offers a marvellous view of the entire Adige Valley. The apple orchards in bloom stretch all the way from Merano to Bolzano, glowing under a pink and white mantle. Even if you aren’t an early riser, a late summer dawn hike to the nearby Monte Lucco summit is well worth the effort, rewarded as it is by one of the most stunning panoramic mountain vistas in South Tyrol.
In autumn, when the larch trees on the slopes change colour and the leaves are tinged in golden hues, it’s time to head for the scenic “Waalwege” irrigation channel trails above Merano. Then there’s the obligatory stop at one of the rustic farm cellars during the autumn Törggele for the taste of the local seasonal produce. Delicacies include South Tyrolean speck-bacon, new potatoes, fresh cheeses and chestnuts paired with the new wine – known locally as the “Sußer”.
Winter activities in the Val di Non Valley mountain are an exhilarating experience: as long as you’re equipped with snowshoes, a sled or touring skis.
